Emergency Refractory Repair Works by CEMAX Refractory Veneering Technology
Emergency refractory repair works to reduce shutdown time and extend refractory life
Industrial refractory veneering is a method of applying a thin refractory protective layer (veneer) over an existing furnace or kiln lining instead of completely replacing the refractory.
A high-temperature insulating or protective layer is applied onto worn refractory surfaces, commonly using:
- Ceramic fiber blankets
- Refractory coatings
- Gunning castables
- Spray-applied monolithic materials
The goal is to:
- Extend refractory life
- Reduce shutdown time
- Improve thermal efficiency
- Delay expensive relining work
Examples:
- Apply castable directly over existing refractory without anchors
- Rapid repair method for cement kilns before major shutdowns
Typical applications:
- Cement kilns
- Fired heaters
- Forge furnaces
- Glass furnaces
- Hot gas ducts
- Incinerators
- Lime kilns
- Petrochemical crackers
- Reheat furnaces
Main benefits:
- Energy savings
- Reduced downtime
- Extends refractory life
- Emergency repair capability
Limitations:
Refractory veneering is usually a maintenance/extension solution, not a permanent substitute for full relining. It may not work well if:
- Structural refractory collapse exists
- Severe anchoring failure occurs
- Large-scale brick spalling exists
- Chemical penetration is already deep
CRVT™ (CEMAX Refractory Veneering Technology)
CRVT is CEMAX’s engineered refractory veneering system designed to extend campaign life, reduce shutdown duration, energy saving, cost saving, and improve thermal efficiency for high-temperature industrial operations.
Who would appreciate CRVT
Plants with continuous operations who would lose huge money when furnaces or boilers stopped
- Palm oil biomass boilers
- Petrochemical
- Power generation
- Refineries
- Steel and metal smelters
- Waste incinerators
What is CRVT
- Special blended gunning products, proprietary machineries, and skilled installation team
- Refractory repair on worn working linings to reach original working lining thickness again
- Approximate thickness
- Maximum 100 mm on vertical lining
- 70 mm on horizontal lining
- Minimum 25 mm (It is more than make-up!)
Why are we recommending CRVT
- Fast commissioning
- Energy saving due to short heating-up
- Cost saving due to low refractory consumption, and repeatable process
Where is the application area for CRVT
- Static aggregates area
- Rotary furnace (only in emergency to prolong operation until next planned shutdown)
- Best performance in the low abrasion zones
- On working lining only
When is perfect to apply CRVT
- In planned shutdown
- Emergency situations (to run furnace until next planned shutdown)
How to apply CRVT
- Assessment on existing lining (very important)
- No need of demolition
- No requirement of new insulating lining and new anchors
- With standard dry dense gunning equipment set-up

Common refractory problems
Industrial plants operate under extreme temperatures, thermal cycling, chemical attack, and continuous production pressure. Refractory failure can lead to:
- Unplanned shutdowns
- Production losses
- Excessive heat loss
- Hotspots and shell overheating
- Cracking and spalling
- Burner area damage
- Energy inefficiency
- Safety risks
- Increased maintenance costs
CRVT is designed to improve operational reliability while minimizing downtime.
